“Give to everyone what you owe them; if you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.” (Romans 13:7 NIV)

This simple verse tells us, gives us instructions that we are to pay what we owe.  If we owe something, we are to pay it.  For nothing is free.  Nowadays people think they are owed something.  

As you look at this scripture, it refers to income taxes, property taxes, or land taxes paid directly to the government, even sales taxes are to be paid.

Then the verse talks about respect for others.  It is a healthy respect for the office and power held by legal authorities such as judges, police, firefighters, government officials—including the president.  We are to show public courtesy, dignity, and recognition to leaders, even if you do not personally agree with their politics or character.  

The Apostle Paul wrote this during the reign of the Roman Emperor Nero, a ruler who was notoriously hostile to Christians. Despite this, Paul argues that God uses government structure to prevent chaos and maintain social order.  Thus, we are to treat others with respect and honor.

This is what Paul told the Christians back then, and this still applies to us today.  We are to live our lives with personal integrity, accountability, and humility always—all the time—even when you do not think someone is watching you.

So, the question of the day is, “If you asked someone, what type of person are you” what would they say.  A person of God, who works hard, doesn’t think anyone owes them anything, who shows honor and respect to others, and always functions with honesty and integrity.  Is that what they would say?  What would they say about you?  It is something to think about, don’t you think?  God Bless.  Amen.
