What is the truth?
September 7, 2026

“And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:32 NLT)
Truth is the quality or state of being in accordance with fact or reality. Truth signifies reality as opposed to illusion or falsehood. The question is, are we truthful in our daily lives? Because with us truth has been used as a weapon to get what we want. Truth for us varies. Truth for us is not consistent. Truth for us ebbs and flows. In humans there is deceit, untruth, and deception. Truth at times is convenient. Truth can change to benefit the person who is speaking. Truth can be painful and eye-opening. So, when the scripture says, “And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” what does it really mean?
Jesus knew that we as people can and will be dishonest, sinful, and wrong, but Jesus also knew if we follow in his footsteps and focused on God, we would realize the truth. For God is and was and will always be—truth. God is unchanging. God is all powerful. God is in all things and is everywhere. God is love. God is Holy. God is just and righteous. God is merciful and gracious. God is our redeemer. God is our sustainer. God is truth. God is our all in all.
Why is this important for us to know? When we live in God’s word we become better people. We want to be more like our Lord—people of integrity, honesty and trustworthy. Thus, the closer we get to our Lord the more honest and truthful we are. This scripture then becomes a reality for us—and the truth will set us free. And we learn to walk in the truth. It is something for us to strive for being true not only to God but to ourselves and others as well. God Bless. Amen.
