We Desire to do God's Will.

-but time and time again we choose to do something else.

October 21, 2026

“I desire to do your will, my God; your law is within my heart.” (Psalm 40:8 NIV)

We try and try to do God’s will.  To be the person God has called us to be.  For God’s will is within our hearts.  But time and time again we fall short.  We know what is right and true.  We know right from wrong and yet we make excuses, so we can get out of doing what is right.  Because sometimes our need is greater than Him who lives within us.

We want something at the store.  We know we cannot afford it.  We buy it anyway.  Our need is greater than Him who lives within us.  We want a drink, we need a drink.  Drinking is a problem for us, we drink anyway.  Our need is greater than Him who lives within us.  We need to eat healthy, because of a health condition.  We eat things we know will cause us problems, because at the time our desire overcomes what is healthy for us to do.  Our need is greater than Him who lives within us.  We gamble, money we do not have.  Which takes away from paying our bills.  Our need is greater than Him who lives within us.   We know it is wrong to gossip.  But we need to tell others how we feel, which adds no value to the conversation.  Our need is greater than Him who lives within us.

We desire to do God’s will, but sometimes our need is greater than Him who lives within us.  We sin.  We become self-absorbed.  We become completely preoccupied with our own thoughts, feelings, desires, interests, or wants, often to the point of neglecting or ignoring others.  Even God!

And then something happens—we remember God.  God becomes greater than our need.  He becomes greater than our desires.  We cry out “Forgive me Lord.  I desire to do your will, my God; your law is within my heart.” And there is hope for there becomes a desire to obey God and what He has called us to do and to be.  For greater is He who lives within me.  God Bless. Amen.
