When asked, “How are you doing” what do you say?

October 10, 2025

When asked, “How are you doing” what do you say? “I’m OK” which means feeling moderately good. “I’m fine” which means I am okay and don’t need help. When answering how you are doing with “I’m ok or I’m fine” it can often carry more meaning than its literal interpretation. Context, tone, and body language play significant roles in understanding what someone truly means when they say this. Most people respond out of politeness, even though life might not be fine for them. Or masking what they are feeling because they do not want to burden you with what is really going on in their life. One time someone asked me that and I thought, “Do you really really want to know!” I said, “I’m OK!” but inside I was hurting. I have found that when I am hurting, when I am emotionally exhausted, I can go to God, for He is safe. He does not judge me. He knows my heart, He knows my pain and can comfort me, and restore my sagging spirit. Psalm 147:3 reads, “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” Sometimes we do not want to burden others with what is going on in our life. Our pain and heartache are not the end of our story. God is making all things new. So, turn to God. Lean upon Him—healing is coming. And remember there are times when it is ok not to share what is going on within you with others, God is sufficient. God Bless. Amen.
